Evaporation of high speed sporadic meteors

چکیده

Recent measurements conducted at the Arecibo Observatory report high-speed sporadic meteors having velocities near 50 km/s. The results seem to indicate a bimodal velocity distribution in the sporadic meteors (maxima at ∼20 km/s and ∼50 km/s). The particles have a maximum mass of ∼1μg. This paper will present an analysis of the ablation of 1μg meteoroids having velocities of 20, 30, 50, and 70 km/s. The calculations show that there is fractionation even for the fast meteoroids, the effect being particularly noticeable for the 1μg sporadic particles, and less so for the heavier particles. The relevance of the calculations to the radar observations of the sporadic meteors will be discussed.

An artificial meteors database as a test for the presence of weak showers

We have constructed an artificial meteor database resembling in all details the real sample collected by the observers of the Comets and Meteors Workshop in the years 1996-1999. The artificial database includes the sporadic meteors and also events from the following showers: Perseids, Aquarid complex, α-Capricornids, July Pegasids and Sagittarids. This database was searched for the presence of ...

Real-Time Detection of Sporadic Meteors in the Intensified TV Imaging Systems

The automatic observation of the night sky through wide-angle video systems with the aim of detecting meteor and fireballs is currently among routine astronomical observations. The observation is usually done in multi-station or network mode, so it is possible to estimate the direction and the speed of the body flight. The high velocity of the meteorite flying through the atmosphere determines ...

Long-Term Continuous Double Station Observation of Faint Meteor Showers

Meteor detection and analysis is an essential topic in the field of astronomy. In this paper, a high-sensitivity and high-time-resolution imaging device for the detection of faint meteoric events is presented. The instrument is based on a fast CCD camera and an image intensifier. Two such instruments form a double-station observation network. The MAIA (Meteor Automatic Imager and Analyzer) syst...

Thermalization of Sputtered Particles as the Source of Diffuse Radiation from High Altitude Meteors

High altitude meteors become luminous at altitudes above ∼130 km, where the standard ablation theory of meteor light production is not applicable. The physical mechanism responsible for their glow has not been known. We present a model that explains their existence, morphology and lightcurves. The model is based on particles ejected from the meteoroid surface through the sputtering process. The...

A Historical Analysis of the Quranic Concept of Lapidating Devils with Meteors

The Quranic concept of lapidating devils with meteors has received a variety of interpretations throughout Islamic history. In the past, it was interpreted to mean heavenly meteors thrown at devils in order to prevent them from giving ear to heavenly tidings. However, in the fourteenth century AH and as a result of modern scientific achievements, different non-literal interpretations were sugge...
